| Qantas Credit Card
Charges |

|
|
From 24th May Qantas will begin
charging flat fees for all tickets that are charged to a
credit card including the published fares where they were
previously absorbed. The charges will be $12.00 for
International tickets and $4.40 for Domestic and Trans-Tasman
tickets. Whilst charges for domestic and nett/discounted fares
have been in place for some time, the removal of the
percentage increase, introduction of flat fee and inclusion of
published fares will allow Qantas to reclaim more of their
merchant fees to offset against costs than they have been able
to in the past.

|
|
Swiss International Air Lines and South
African Airways have officially become the 17th and 18th members of the Star Alliance. Airline chief executives and Star Alliance chiefs attended the ceremony at Zurich Airport

The two new members expand the alliance
network to cover 842 airports in 152 countries, with 660 airport lounges
and 15,500 daily departures.
Current Star members are Air Canada, Air New Zealand, ANA,

Air
New Zealand ups the ante with new longhaul product
|
|
Air New Zealand has set a
new stake in the ground above and beyond world standards
in inflight service with its revamped long haul product
on board the airline's Boeing 747 and brand new Boeing
777 aircraft
As part of a
multi-million dollar upgrade, Air New Zealand's longhaul
fleet has been configured into a new three class layout
of a premium Business Premier cabin, a new class for the
airline called Pacific Premium Economy and Pacific
Economy.
Never content to simply
follow the competition, Air New Zealand's new Business
Premier class offers a world-leading seat which coverts
from a 22 inch wide soft leather armchair to a truly
lie-flat bed measuring 6 foot 7.5 inches in length and
33 inches at the shoulders. The new seat also offers
numerous new and thoughtful design features such as an
ottoman footrest which doubles as a visitor seat, a
large adjustable table that allows customers to dine
together, a large 10.4" personal inflight
entertainment screen with noise cancelling headphones,
clever storage and in-seat power ports. More...

Star Alliance develops
African Airpass
|
|
The Star Alliance has
launched an African Airpass to coincide with South
African Airways joining the global airline network.
The airpass can be
purchased in conjunction with any intercontinental
return ticket to South Africa or other African
destination issued by an alliance member. The pass can
then be used to construct an itinerary using SAA's
domestic and African network.
Fares are based on a
fixed rate per mile, which is then multiplied by the
total mileage of each flight. At present the fixed rate
per mile is $0.15 for adults and $0.10 for children plus
applicable fees, taxes and surcharges.
A sample itinerary
could be: Johannesburg – Kruger National Park – Cape
Town – Durban – Johannesburg – Windhoek –
Johannesburg – Victoria Falls – Johannesburg –
Nairobi – Johannesburg. This routing covers 8,439
miles and would cost $1,266 plus fees, taxes and
surcharges, according to Star Alliance.

Firms crack down on
'wasteful and maverick' T&E spending |
|
Companies are checking
employee expenses more thoroughly now than
a year ago, according to results of a new poll.
The survey of 840 staff using personal and corporate cards in
the US and Europe by American Express found that companies and
their employees “are often on opposing teams”.
Head of corporate card UK Paul Abbott said: “Firms around
the world have stepped up their vigilance over wasteful and
maverick spending, but there is still a tug of war going on
with employees who are making buying decisions.
“In response, we’ve seen clients’ significantly expand
use of the corporate cards to manage expense and drive
compliance.” More...

| In flight
mobile phone plan by Air France |
| Air France
believes it will be the first airline to take delivery of an
aircraft allowing mobile phones to be used on board without
disrupting navigation.
The Airbus A318 due to enter
service early next year will be equipped with OnAir, a special
in-flight system which allows passengers to use mobile
telephones.
Air France will carry out
trials on the aircraft from March to September 2007, first of
all by messaging and emailing only, and then with sound on
servies in Europe and to North Africa.
The carrier will seek
passenger feedback with the findings determining whether the
service will be extended or not to other aircraft in the
fleet.
The service will enable
passengers to:
*receive and send calls and
SMS’ on a mobile phone,
*receive and send emails on a
laptop or PDA,
*access the internet in WAP/imode.
Leaflets will be distributed
to passengers before the flight (explaining the service, how
it functions, tariffs etc) and flight attendants will make
announcements during the flight.
Head of marketing Patrick
Roux said: “Air France has always shared the full benefits
of the latest technology with its passengers, while
endeavouring to preserve the flight as a haven of peace and
well-being.”
Meanwhile, Air France and KLM
passengers are being offered online check-in for flights
operating to almost all destinations on the networks of both
airlines.
E-ticket holders can choose
seat numbers and print their boarding card at home or at their
office. At the airport, they deposit their baggage at a
dedicated drop-off counter, or go straight to the boarding
lounge

| Landed
but at wrong airport |
|
|
It was
Ryanair that pioneered the art of flying passengers to
some far-flung airfields and telling them they had arrived
in one of Europe's loveliest cities.
So it
should have come as no surprise to travellers on board
Flight 9884 from Liverpool to Derry, in Northern Ireland,
when they landed not in the city but Ballykelly Camp
instead - an army airfield 8km away.
Ryanair passengers are
also accustomed to not having an air-bridge to get them
inside the terminal, but in this case they didn't even
have any steps to get them off the jet. Luckily, the
flight's original destination was close enough for ground
staff to bring the steps by road to the army base.
