Weathering the Storm - A note from Claire Gray, Executive Director TRAVELOG!C

Claire comments on the state of play in the Travel Industry.

Week by week we are seeing a gradual return to normality in travel. The recent events of terror, war and SARS certainly caused many organisations to review their travel requirements during this time.  Conversely, over time, the increasing pressure that travel is vital to business is inducing people to resume normal practice and in fact some organisations are making up for lost time and travelling more than ever.

We have remained motivated and confident of a rapid full recovery throughout this time. This downturn has allowed us to focus inwards with a view to improving our processes. Our Traveller Security Services has been received exceptionally well by our clients and do give the necessary peace of mind whilst your employees travel abroad. The recent advice by our Foreign Minister, Mr Downer that “travel is an overwhelmingly safe venture” is most encouraging. Additionally the World Health Organisation has now lifted any SARS related travel restrictions to Hong Kong and Singapore.

As the great business mentors say: “setbacks are invitations to develop ourselves for the future” and as we kick back into full swing, I truly believe we are more developed to manage travel in this millennium.

Singapore Government remains vigilant in its fight against SARS

On 31 May 2003, the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Geneva confirmed that Singapore had been removed from WHO’s list of countries with local transmission of SARS. The announcement follows the recent downgrade of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s (DFAT) travel advisory against Singapore.

Air Travel: News & Views What is happening when and where in the world of aviation

Ansett Levy Gets Going

Airfares will be $10 cheaper from next month when the controversial Ansett levy is scrapped.

Federal Cabinet yesterday decided the levy, designed to cover redundancy entitlements of former Ansett workers, should be wound up.

Cabinet was advised enough money had been raised to ensure taxpayers would not be out of pocket for the $335.5 million paid to the workers after the airline collapsed in late 2001.

The move was welcomed by tourism groups and airlines, who promised to take the $10 off airfares from next month.

Air France Concorde: Final Commercial Flight

Air France's streamlined white Concorde swooped into a Paris airport Saturday in a final commercial flight home, ending two and a half decades of supersonic travel between New York and Paris.

The plane touched down at Charles de Gaulle Airport at 5:44 p.m. local time after cruising over the Atlantic Ocean at twice the speed of sound. Several thousand Concorde fans greeted the "white bird," as the jet is fondly known in French.

Some held banners reading, "Thank you Concorde, we love you."

"It's the end of an era in aviation," Dominique Bussereau, France's transport secretary, said before the flight took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Three trucks sprayed red, white and blue water in an arc in front of the plane as it departed for its 3 1/2 hour flight. Eleven crew members and 68 passengers were aboard -- including a woman who bought a seat for her dog, Romeo, as she does every month.

Pacific Air Milestone

QANTAS and Boeing this month are marking the 75th anniversary of the first commercial airline flight between Australia and the USA.

It was mid-1928 when Charles Kingsford Smith and 3 companions landed the Southern Cross Fokker trimotor plane at Brisbane’s EagleFarm Airport after a 12,000km journey from Oakland, California. The trip, via Hawaii and Fiji, took 83 hours and 15 minutes at an average speed of 140kmh. More than 20,000 people greeted the history-making aviators.

Qantas has marked the anniversary by flying a new Boeing 737-800 along the same route, but in much less time. The latest journey took 16 hours at an average speed of 840kmh. Anniversary events were held in Oakland, Honolulu and Nadi.
