BA Amended Baggage
rules
|
|
|
|
|
BRITISH Airways will
charge a fixed fee of up to $300 per bag for excess
luggage, as part of a wide ranging review of its baggage
policy. From 11 Oct bags that exceed a customers’ free
allowance will attract the fixed fee which is dependent
on journey length. Other changes include a new maximum
weight of 23kg for any checked bag, regardless of the
class or route of travel, to comply with health and
safety recommendations. Long-haul routes have different
allowances depending on cabin, with First, Club World
and World Traveller Plus allowed two bags and World
Traveller allowed just one. On UK domestic routes the
allowance drops to one bag of 23kg, but on all flights
carry-on luggage allowances have also changed, with
weight restrictions removed and two pieces of
standard-dimensioned carry-on allowed. Passengers will
also be able to carry a piece of sporting equipment such
as skis or golf clubs at no extra charge, and there’s
a “substantial increase” in the baggage allowance
for people travelling with infants. BA said the new
policies would be easier to understand as well as
reducing queuing time at airports. The carrier said “Making
the airport experience simpler and speedier for our
customers is one of our key objectives as we move
towards the opening of Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5
in March 08.” BA also said in an ‘industry first’
it would give passengers the opportunity to pre-pay for
excess baggage online before arriving at the airport.
The fee per bag is £120 for longhaul routes, £60 for
short-haul and £30 for domestic, with a 20% discount
applying if prepaid online.

Airlines to Phase Out Paper
Tickets by 2008
|
|
LAST WEEK AT THE WORLD AIR
TRANSPORT SUMMIT IN PARIS, E-TICKETS MOVED from novelty
to de rigueur, as the International Air Transport
Association (IATA), which represents 261 airlines -- 94
percent of the world's total -- established that all its
member airlines should be paperless by 2008. E-tickets
were first issued by Alaska Airlines in 1995 and have
since grown in popularity, especially with low-cost
carriers. E-ticketing is expected to save the industry
approximately $3 billion a year.

Qantas to expand India Routes
|
|
QANTAS has announced plans
for codeshare agreements with Indian carrier Jet
Airways, which will hugely boost its reach into the
burgeoning aviation market in India. The carrier has
applied to the International Air Services Commission for
rights to codeshare on daily Jet Airways services
between Singapore and Mumbai, New Delhi and Chennai,
while Jet Airways would reciprocally codeshare on QF
flights from Singapore to Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne,
Brisbane and Sydney. QF said it intends to exercise full
fifth freedom traffic rights to New Delhi and Mumbai,
but the Chennai services will be restricted to transit
passengers only, due to limitations in
Australia-Singapore air services arrangements.

Hong Kong Prepares for Largest Shopping
Festival Ever
|
|
IF YOU HAPPEN TO BE WANDERING
IN HONG KONG THIS SUMMER AND SEE FIREWORKS near the Tsim Sha
Tsui Clock Tower, that's not national pride the Chinese are
celebrating but the sheer joy of capitalism. It's all part
of the Hong Kong Tourism Board's fifth annual and largest
shopping festival called "Discover the Diverse Shopping
Experience," which runs from June 24 through Aug. 31.
Participating outlets run the gamut from open-air markets to
trendy boutiques and shopping malls. Additionally, the HKTB
is organizing its popular Grand Lucky Draw with prizes
totalling approximately $346,000. Grand prize is an Audemars
Piguet Jules Ademars watch that retails for a mere $75,641.
The fireworks are part of the Aqua Fantasia multimedia water
show, which presents colourful images and words on a
transforming water curtain at various times throughout the
day, with pyrotechnic displays on June 24 and 25, and July 1
and 2. Also, fireworks can be seen nightly near the
Convention & Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai during the
light and sound show "A Symphony of Lights."

| Taking
Charge at 35,000 Feet |

|
| IN
THE WHAT-WILL-THEY-THINK-OF-NEXT DEPARTMENT, someone has
figured out a way to pull power from the standard
1/8-inch headphone jack found in most commercial
aircraft today and use it to charge pretty much anything
from a Blackberry handheld to an iPod. The InFlight
Power USB works by trickle charging an adapter and then
passing the built-up charge to the attached device
before repeating the three- to five-minute cycle. The
standard USB version costs about $35 and can charge any
USB-chargeable device. Have a cell phone that needs
charging, too? Plug in one of the numerous adapters. The
InFlight USB charger comes bundled for iPods or
Blackberries for about $45, or with an adapter of your
choosing for $55. Additional adapters will run you about
$7 each. There are solutions for more than 700 devices.
