Directors Comment

Claire Gray, Executive Director says

"Welcome to July 2005. We wish you a very prosperous and successful new year. Typically travel represents a company's third largest expense and exactly how successful you are at containing costs this coming year will be dependent upon how well you/we manage your travel dollar. This is where Travelogic bring the most value to our clients. We are expert in re-engineering travel policies and driving traveller behaviour to consider the lowest logical fare in every instance resulting in significant cost reduction in your travel account. Whilst fees are now in place to make a simple point to point reservation, we will argue that booking through Travelogic, is actually the most cost effective way of booking travel, if you consider your own time is of value. Additionally you receive the expertise of the cost reduction initiatives and further benefits as well. The below table displays the findings of an independent study conducted by Cranfield University, USA, January 2005.."

Qantas eyes airline partnership

Qantas Airways chief executive Geoff Dixon says the airline is likely to merge with a foreign carrier in the next five to 10 years.

Mr Dixon reiterated the company's support for consolidation in the aviation industry and said the scene had been set by the merger last year of Air France and KLM to create the world's biggest airline.

"I think that we will be in some association with another carrier" in five to 10 years, he said.

"I think that will become necessary." More:

New passport rules

The Australian Passports Act comes into effect July 1, incorporating new provisions to help combat identity theft. In particular there are much tougher penalties for passport fraud and stricter procedures governing the replacement of lost or stolen passports.

The new rules require travellers to report lost or stolen passports as soon as possible as this authorises the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to cancel them immediately and permanently.

Travelogic's Globalstar partnership-Globalstar update

Singapore, 21 June 2005 – Reducing costs in transactions, achieving efficiencies, and customisation were among the gamut of issues discussed by delegates at a global forum on the future of corporate travel.

In an industry rife with choices for airlines, hotels and booking platforms, travel managers in corporations must clearly see the value that travel management companies and travel agents can offer them, said Martin P. Metzler, President and Managing Director of GlobalStar Travel Management in his assessment of the forum discussions held at the end of May.

"The Internet, the emergence of low cost carriers, and deregulated global distribution systems (GDS) have actually created opportunities for travel management companies," he said. "If you ask corporate customers where they see us adding best value to managing their steadily increasing travel expenses, they will highlight specific areas: data consolidation, cost-savings, and delivering customised products and services in the most effective and convenient way."

The new Heathrow Connect service, a joint partnership between BAA and First Great Western Link, started operating on Sunday 12 June

This is the first time that West London stations have had a direct train service to and from Heathrow Airport terminals 1, 2 and 3.

The service serves Ealing Broadway, West Ealing, Hanwell, Southall and Hayes & Harlington stations, with a half hourly service for most of the day, taking less than 20 minutes from Ealing Broadway to the Airport.

The service is operated by brand new electric trains, providing spacious, comfortable seating, toilets and extra luggage facilities

London transport system returns to normal
London's public transportation network is largely back up and running after the July 7 subway and bus bombings that killed at least 52 people, while search teams continued to comb through the wreckage of a train in Russell Square.
As of July 10, subway lines were running except for the Circle line, which remained suspended. The Hammersmith & City line will operate between Hammersmith and Paddington only. There is no service on the Metropolitan line between Moorgate and Aldgate, and on the District line there is no service between High Street Kensington and Edgware Road.
On the Piccadilly line there is no service between Hyde Park Corner and Arnos Grove and between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge. Special buses will stop at Arnos Grove and Finchley Central to provide a connection with the Northern line. A second bus will serve Bounds Green, Wood Green, Turnpike Lane and Seven Sisters to connect with Victoria line services. Additional bus services are operating on Route 91 between Holloway Road and Euston via Caledonian Road and King's Cross St Pancras.
King's Cross St Pancras Underground station is open for the Metropolitan line only and there is no interchange with other Underground lines. All commuter rail lines are open. Bus service has returned to nearly normal except where buses are being rerouted around bomb sites. The Eurostar is also running as usual between London and Paris.
All airports are functioning normally, but travellers are advised to arrive early due to heightened security.

Bangkok: City of Contrast

In the midst of dynamic growth as a fast paced modern commercial center, Bangkok manages to preserve its cultural heritage to a marked degree. The soaring roofs and gleaming spires of the Grand Palace and the city's many historic temples: Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Temple of Dawn and other shrines present the visitor with a picture of medieval Oriental wonder; as in an Eastern fairytale.

Metropolitan Bangkok covers 612 sq mi of southern Thailand, and is located in the center of the most fertile rice producing delta in the world. A network of natural and artificial canals crisscross the city. They feed to and from Thailand's hydrological lifeline, the broad Chao Phraya River, which winds through the city providing transport for passengers and cargo.

Qantas flight to Beijing resume

Qantas have announced they are to resume direct flights to Beijing from January 2006, almost 7 years after withdrawing from the destination.

There will be 3 flights weekly initially, with a view to growing to daily within 2 years.

"Travel between Australia and China has increase by more than 40% in the past three years and is expected to grow by a further 30% in the next 12 months," Executive GM, John Borghetti said last week.

The upcoming Olympics in Beijing are also expected to increase traffic into China significantly in the years leading up to the event.

Employee of the month

I started at Travelogic in August 2004 working on the Football Federation Australia account. When the opportunity came up for me to head Travelogic's Group department. I jumped at the chance. Having worked in group departments previously I knew it would be an exciting challenge to start off in this as yet unexplored territory for Travelogic.

Originally from Melbourne, I started my career with Ansett in 1989 and moved to Sydney in 2000 to work on the Olympics - and I just didn't go home. I look forward to making your group/conference travel as easy as your day to day bookings and hope we can work together soon.
