On
behalf of Travelogic I would like to wish you all a
Merry Christmas and may 2007 be a successful year for us
all.The recent
American Express Global Business Travel Survey predicts
2007 will see increases of 3-5% on airfares. Room
inventory is growing at a slower rate than air capacity
in Australia which will see a double digit growth in
selected city hotel prices for 2007.
We are here to ensure
that your companies minimize your exposure to these
increases by working in creative partnership with you
the customer and our suppliers in developing corporate
programs. If you would like more details from this

Increase
to UK Departure Taxes
|
|
|
Effective from
February 1, 2007 the Air Passenger Duty Tax (APD) rate
for flights within the EU will double from £5 to £10
for economy passengers, and from £10 to £20 for
premium passengers. There will also be a 100%
increase in rates for long-haul passengers, meaning
economy passengers will see a rise of £20 to the new £40
rate, and premium passengers will have to pay £80, a
hike of £40. Passengers should also note that premium
economy tickets incur the higher rate of APD rather than
the economy rate, meaning that a premium economy ticket
will rise by a punitive £40 from next year. For those
companies that utilise the UK as a hub or destination
this will see a significant increase in airport taxes.

BA
Launches new Club World product
|
|
|
Look upon British Airways'
$250 million upgrade of Club World (its long-haul business
class brand) as an evolution rather than a
revolution.
That's because BA's Club
World revamp eschews the increasingly popular east-west
"herringbone" seat layout adopted by Virgin
Atlantic, Air New Zealand and Cathay Pacific amongst
others. Neither has BA taken Singapore Airline's brave
move in deciding to sell business class seating based on
width rather than space in front. But why is BA upgrading
Club World in the first place ?
The new Club World's
seating is wider (because the arm rests disappear when the
seat is reclined) "which means that passengers can
now turn more easily in the bed," says Willie Walsh,
"and they've also got AVOD [audio visual on demand]
and noise-reducing headsets. Our Club Kitchen is a new and
unique dining option which enables passengers to get
snacks and so on whenever they like."
Other features include a
larger 10 inch screen, a laptop locker and a large privacy
screen. Otherwise the existing north-south layout (with
the same forward and backwards seating) remains the
same. More....

Star
Alliance New Website
|
|
|
Star
Alliance, the airline network for Earth, has unveiled its
new www.staralliance.com website. The most obvious change
to the site is its new look and feel, with a fresher and
more modern design. The new layout has the site structured
into three different lobbies, one for travellers, one for
business partners and one for the media.
The
traveller's lobby allows easy access to all the necessary
information and tools for this target group. In addition
to obtaining the key information on core alliance
benefits, frequent flyer programmes, lounges, fare
products and booking contacts, users now have several
innovative and unique alliance tools at their disposal.
Under
"flight search", travellers can obtain real time
information for flights operated by any Star Alliance
member carrier. By opting to receive this information by
either SMS or email, business travellers can keep abreast
of any changes and maximise time.
A
further new feature allows users to access the most up to
date visa and health information for their travel plans.
The
website also offers real-time baggage tracing information.
The
new enhanced "flight search" tool is the most
authoritative source of Star Alliance schedule information
and even enables customers to purchase airline tickets
directly from our member carriers via deep-linking to the
respective booking engine.
In
addition to information on all the Star Alliance fare
products, the new website features the Round-the-World
Mileage Calculator as either a downloadable programme or
as the recently launched on-line version. This tool allows
customers to plan their individual Round-the-World
itinerary using the Star Alliance Round-the-World fare.
The completed routing can then be sent to one of the
member carriers or a travel agency for booking and
ticketing.
Last,
but not least, the popular downloadable tools such as the
pocket timetable for PDA's or the Star Alliance
Screensaver, can continue to be sourced from the new
website.

Hotel Rates Soar
|
|
Higher-tier hotel rates
worldwide have increased at a much faster rate than those
in budget sectors, and major cities around the world
continue to show double-digit growth in room rates,
according to a hotel survey recently released by HRG.
The survey, based on
industry figures and booking and rate data mined from
major clients during the first nine months of this year,
showed that room rates increased proportionally to the
star rating of the hotel. Five-star property rates were up
15.2 percent over 2005, compared with a 4.8 percent
increase for budget properties.
Regionally, Asia/Pacific
showed the highest increase in room rates, up by almost 20
percent, because of rapid growth in India, Singapore, Hong
Kong and Tokyo, according to the survey. Eastern Europe
also showed a strong growth rate of 18 percent.
The survey noted the 10
most expensive cities as far as hotel rates. Moscow had
the top position with an average rate of —219.19 per
night, as business travel to the city is increasing while
the city has a shortage of quality hotels for corporate travellers.
New York City was second, with an average rate of —178.94
per night, followed by Paris, Milan, Hong Kong, London,
Dubai, Stockholm, Geneva and Rome.
It was Mumbai, however,
that showed the highest growth, a 46 percent increase in
room rates, according to the survey. Moscow and Singapore
followed with growth rates of 29 percent. Two U.S. cities
were in the growth-rate top 10: New York at 17 percent and
Houston at 15 percent.
HRG also noted the
increased push from hoteliers for dynamic pricing, saying
that demand-based pricing that can change on an hourly or
daily basis is now largely the industry standard. Travel
managers, however, remain reticent to accept such a model.

Airline
Restriction on Liquids
|
|
INTERNATIONAL air travellers
to and from Australia will face new restrictions on liquids
in hand luggage from March next year.
The move follows the arrest
in the United Kingdom of terrorism suspects plotting to blow
up airliners using liquid explosives smuggled aboard in hand
luggage.
Transport Minister Mark
Vaile said the Government would introduce the new hand
luggage restrictions in late March.
"As a result of
vulnerabilities exposed in the UK in August with regard to
liquids being carried in hand luggage onto international
flights, the Government this week has taken a decision that
as of March 31 next year, all international travellers, both
outbound and inbound, ... will need to be restricted in the
carriage of liquids, aerosols and gels to 100 millilitre
containers," he said on ABC radio.
"Those containers will
need to be carried in a one litre clear plastic bag in hand
luggage and separately screened in the way, for example,
that laptop computer batteries are separately
screened."
He said there would be
exceptions for passengers with medical conditions who needed
particular medications and also for quantities of baby milk
or baby food required for the flight.
Prime Minister John Howard
said the Government would look at extending the restrictions
to domestic flights.
